Duke and Shelby: Great Dane Painting 1 of 2

A new painting! My reference photo was pretty tiny but I made it work!!

Hi everyone! I have a new painting to show you. I was commissioned to paint two Great Danes, Duke and Shelby. Sadly one of them passed away, and my client thought these paintings would be a wonderful gift to the owners to remember their wonderful Dane. So here is the progress on the first painting:

Now let it be known that this was my FIRST dog portrait, I’ve painted muskies and bass and even a pheasant, but I’ve never painted a dog! So overall, I think it went pretty well. Fur is very fun to paint and the eyes are so expressive on a dog. It gives it life and soul. Onto the NEXT!

The Great Dane!

The Great Dane!

And one more! Enjoy!

Duke turned out really good. I'm very happy with the loose brush style. Lots of grays and greens and browns in there making it so he's not just a black blob of fur.
