Hi everyone! I have a new painting to show you. I was commissioned to paint two Great Danes, Duke and Shelby. Sadly one of them passed away, and my client thought these paintings would be a wonderful gift to the owners to remember their wonderful Dane. So here is the progress on the first painting:
I sketch out and shade in some of the areas that I want in shadow.
I wash the canvas with burnt sienna, then start blocking out my shadows and detail the eyes and nose.
I work my way down the outline of the ears and back.
adding more detail to the face and back.
I fill out the chest, leaving the color and tongue for last.
now I fill in the tongue and change brushes to do the collar and tags
then I start masking out the background with a more neutral red/gray/brown combo
And he’s finished! 4 hours!
Now let it be known that this was my FIRST dog portrait, I’ve painted muskies and bass and even a pheasant, but I’ve never painted a dog! So overall, I think it went pretty well. Fur is very fun to paint and the eyes are so expressive on a dog. It gives it life and soul. Onto the NEXT!
